But things were about to change. As early as 1963 the directors of William Grant & Sons, all descendants of the founder, resolved to bottle Glenfiddich as a ‘pure malt’ (‘straight malt’ in the USA). It was launched the following year, was soon to be found in the nascent ‘duty free’ shops in European airports and was being advertised nationally. The company’s policy was to ‘encourage drinkers to regard it as a natural extension to their experience of blended whisky … To add Glenfiddich to his repertoire for special occasions and personal enjoyment’ (John Mole, UK Marketing Director). Sales of the brand rose by 50% in both 1970 and 1971.

Other distillers looked on with interest, some expressing open scepticism – notably the Distillers Company Limited (DCL), although its subsidiary, John Walker & Sons, began to bottle Cardhu in 1965, and was advertising it by 1969 with the line ‘Cardhu single Highland malt Scotch whisky demands an educated palate.’
